Our excursion starts at the the Lenin's head square taking its way through the center of Ulan-Ude to the picturesque valley of Ivolginsk village. We spend a couple of hours exploring the center of Buddhism in Russia, you get to know traditions, architecture, some folk beliefs, difference between original Buddhism from Thibet and Buryat Buddhism and even learn how to make your wishes come true ;)

Ivolginsky Datsan, located in 40 minutes drive from Ulan Ude, is the most important Buddhist monastery in Russia. It's a complex of Dugans (lama temples) built back in 1940s in the one of the most picturesque valleys around. It is also home to a phenomenon that continues to intrigue scientists and attract believers by the thousands — the preserved body of the Khambo Lama Itegilov, who died in 1927 and is still sitting upright in the lotus position.

Russian history was always not the easiest one, but there is something that deserved a special mention, the Old Believer phenomena. After Great Church Splitup back in 16th century, part of russian people who didn't obey new rules were highly repressed and forcefully exiled to Siberia. Buryatia to be exact. Since then these families had lived in isolation keeping their religion and of course old russian culture. Whereas orthodox Russia kept changing, OldBelievers did not.
