Two fellows after a walk
The local cuisine is a rich mixture of different styles and influences as it stands on the crossroads of european russian and asian food. So you can divide it into 2 major sections:
Buryat food. Ex. pozi, bukhlyor, horkhog
Russian food. Ex. borsch, pirozhki, pelmeni
Buryat cuisine:
"Museum" cafe, Lenina str, 46; on a way from Lenin's head to Arbat street (11.30-19.00). 150 r/meal
"Shenekhen" cafe, Smolina str, 81; on a way to train station, near the monument of a boy with a bird (09.00-21.00) 150 r/meal
"Baatar orgoo" YURT GER cafe, Verhnaya Beryozovka, Dokuchaeva str.11. Only minibus 37 goes there. You can take it from Baikal Plaza hotel bus stop, tell a driver to stop at "KAFE YURTA". Takes about 20-30 minutes drive. Only traditional food and very nice atmosphere. 300 r/meal
"Buuza" cafe/bar, Communist str. 41a; on tram tracks, near hotel Siberia, 3 mins from Lenin's head
"Buuza" (again?) cafe, Yerbanova str. 20; 1 min from Lenin's head, left to Baikal Plaza hotel
"Tenghis" restaurant , Yerbanova str. 12; Inside Baikal Plaza hotel
"Student snacks" cafe/bar, Razhurova str. 1; just behind Opera house
"Buuza" (again?!) cafe, Communist str. 44; opposite Siberia hotel
Russian cuisine:
"Seli-Poeli" cafe, Lenin str 19 (09.00-23.00)
"Happy Land" cafe and bar, Lenin str 52 (10.00-23.00). 150 r/meal, 80 r/beer
"Appetite" cafe , Opposite Lenin's head. (10.00-22.00). Adequate prices, nice 'tray style' menu. Very close to our hostel
Other cuisines:
"Subway" , Sukh-Bator str 16; Opposite to our hostel
There are heaps of cheap local traditional buryat cafes in Hodigitria Cathedral area.
Pubs and nightclubs:
Irish pub. Not exactly an irish pub, it’s a cafe which tries to serve good beer. Located in the end of pedestrian part of Lenin str to the right. (11.00-1.00). Beer from 90. Some days a week they have parties.
Metro. Pizza, grill bar and nightclub in one. (midday-3am, nightclub is up to 6am). Follow the tram line downhill until you see the bridge, it’s on the left.
Bochka. Shashlyk (kebab), local beer, lively atmosphere, live music, summer beer garden. Kebab is 200-300, beer 150. Proper cheescake available.
Beer mug. 17.00-6.00. Beer from 60, cocktail from 70. Around the corner from B\aikal Plaza, opposite Sputnik supermarket.
SkyBar. Absolutely stunning panoramic view from 10th floor of EuroZone, ship shape building in lower town. Beer and Pizza.
